James Irwin Manning was born on the 28th May 1838 in John Street, Saint Margaret, Rochester, Kent, England.
Mother Theresa Jane Manning, formerly Devoi (later records record her as Devoy), residing at Holborn Lane, Chatham.
The birth was registered 6 weeks later on the 9th July 1838. No father listed.

Theresa Jane Devoy married Thomas Manning (1811-1838?) on the 21st September 1834 at St. Mary the Virgin Church, Chatham, Kent.
The record states that Thomas Manning is a bachelor and Theresa Jane Deyoy, a spinster.
Witnesses were William Manning and J.T.D. Whiffin.

2nd marriage.
St. Mary Magdalene, Gillingham, Kent. 21st June 1840.
Stephen Cooper, full age, bachelor, Straw Manufacturer, residing in Gillingham, father, Stephen Cooper, Farmer.
Theresa Jane Manning, full age, spinster(?), residing in Gillingham, father, Thomas Devoy, Indigo Planter (?).
Witnesses, Richard Lee and Mary Ann Lee.

Theresa Jane and Stephen Cooper had one child. Theresa Adeline Cooper who was born in Hoo, Kent, in 1841.
The family all seem to disappear after that and I could find no trace of them anywhere.
I couldn't find James Irwin Manning in the 1841 or 1851 census reports either.

The next record I have for James Irwin Manning, son of Theresa Jane Devoy and Thomas Manning, is his marriage record.
All Saints Parish Church, Frindsbury, Kent, England. 23rd December 1860 to Emma Gates.

Emma Gates was born in John Street, Rochester (the same street where James Irwin Manning was born).
Her parents were John Thomas Gates 1811-1885 and Harriet Bartholemew 1808-1883.

I next found Emma Manning (nee Gates) in St. Marylebone Workhouse, Northumberland Street, London, in 1881.
Emma Manning, married, age 42, Tailoress, born in Rochester, Kent.

James Irwin Manning and Emma Gates had 5 children.
1. James Irvin Manning.
James was born in the Oct/Nov/Dec quarter of 1863 in Rochester, Kent.
He was baptised on the 10th January 1964 at St. Margaret's, Rochester, Kent.
He died in 1865 in Rochester, Kent, and was buried on the 13th August 1865 in St. Margaret's, Rochester, Kent, age 1.

James was born on the 6th January 1866 in Rochester, Kent.
He was baptised on the 2nd September 1866 at St. Nicholas, Rochester, Kent.

James Manning, son, single, 22, Labourer, not working, born in Rochester, Kent.
Abigail Manning, daughter, 12, scholar, born in Marylebone, London.
(living next door is Emma Manning's daughter Louisa, who is now married to Albert Hill).

Emma and James's second son, James Irvin Manning, died in 1897 in the Medway, Kent age 31.

Louisa was born on the 15th November 1869 in Wimbledon, Surrey, England.

27th November 1876. Louisa Manning. Returned to mother, who is living at 6 Bridport Street, Marylebone.

Christ Church Workhouse Register, Southwark, London. Admitted 24th August 1880.
Emma Manning, born 1840.
Louisa Manning, born 1867.
Abigail Manning, born 1878. All destitute.
The next day, on the 25th August 1880, Emma, Louisa and Abigail left the workhouse.
The record states "Taken out by mother".

1881 Census for St. Marylebone School, Hayes, Middlesex.
Louisa Manning, inmate, age 13, scholar, born in Wimbledon, Surrey. The enumerator has added a (1) which means deaf and dumb (although no other reports state this).

Louisa Manning married Albert Edward Hill in the Medway, Kent, in the Oct/Nov/Dec quarter of 1889.
