Crawley is a parish (a great portion of the village being in Ifield parish), with a station on the Horsham branch of the L.B. and S.C. railway, 29 miles from London, 7 northeast from Horsham and 9 and a half north from Cuckfield, in the eastern division of the county.
Bottinghill hundred, Lewes rape, Horsham union, County Court district of Horsham, archdeaconry and rural deanery of Lewes third division, and diocese of Chichester.

The village is lighted with gas and is very rapidly increasing in extent. The church of St. John the Baptist dates its first foundation probably from the beginning of the 13th century, but the existing church is chiefly of the Decorated and Perpendicular periods and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle and a fine Perpendicular tower, erected about 1430 and containing 8 bells, cast and hung by Gillett, Bland & Co. Croydon.

The roof is opened timbered and curious and on one of the tie beams is carved the following inscription, in Old English letters: "Man yn wel bewar, for wardly good makyth man blynde - Bewar befor, whate comyth behynde:". There is a brass to William Blast, 1438, and the brass effigy of a lady of later date, but without inscription.
Nearly all the windows are stained. the church was partially restored in 1845 and in 1880 was enlarged by the addition of a north aisle and generally renovated, at a cost of about £3,000.
Nearly all the carved oak work, of which the church contains numerous excellent examples, is the work of the present rector.

The register of baptisms dates from the year 1653. marriages, 1688, and burials 1676.
The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £150, with residence, and 60 acres of glebe, in the gift of Col. John Stracey Clitherow and held, since 1876 by the Rev. John Barrett Lennard M.A of Magdalene College, Cambridge.
Here are Congregational and Baptist chapels. The Catholic church and monastery of St. Francis were erected in 1861 at a cost of upwards of £2,000, they are of brick and stone.
A cemetery is attached to the church.

Fairs for horses and cattle are held on the 8th May and 9th September.
About a mile north stood the county oak, at the Surrey boundary, on Lowfield Heath.

At Vine cottage, near the station, resided the late Mark Lemon, the well known editor of "Punch", who died May 20th 1870.
Springfield is the seat of Lord De Blaquiere. The pricipal landowners are Mrs Montefiore, the lady of the manor and Philip Saillard esq.
The soil is clay and marl; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats.
The population of Crawley is 457, but including the Ifield side, it is more than 1,200.
The area is 725 acres; rateable value, £1,564.
