Flaherty Family Tree
:read
The earliest Flaherty in your tree that anyone on Ancestry has been able to trace is Patrick Flaherty.
Someone has Patrick as being born in 1811, Aran Islands, Galway County, Ireland. They must have access to records that I am unable to track. They are currently checking registers in Gort na Gcapall, Inishmore Island and Killeany on Inishmore.

Patrick married Alice Darney about 1837 (no record found in England so we are guessing it was Ireland).

1841 census, Lane End, Longton, Stoke Upon Trent, Staffordshire.

Patrick ‘Flagherty’, 30, Labourer, born in Ireland.
Alice Flagherty, 20, born in Ireland.
Thomas Flagherty, 3, Staffordshire.
Mary Flagherty, 1, Staffordshire.

(Spelling errors in names, incorrect ages, in the census are quite common and are mainly due to the man who filled out the census and how many ‘nips to keep the cold out’ he’d had at each house visited).

1851 census, Bridge St, Longton, Staffordshire. (Lodging in the Rectory).

Patrick Flaherty, Head, 40, Labourer/Bricklayer, born in Ireland.
Alice Flaherty, Wife, 30, born in Ireland.
Thomas Flaherty, Son, 13, Mould Turner in Pot Works, born in Longton, Staffs.
Sarah Flaherty, Daughter, 8, Scholar, born Longton.
Mary Flaherty, (I believe the first Mary has died) Daughter, 5, Scholar, born in Longton.
James Flaherty, Son, 3, born in Longton.
John Flaherty, Son, 1, born in Longton.

Patrick Flaherty died in January 1852 in Longton, Staffs aged 41. Cause not known.

Patrick and Alice’s children.

Thomas Flaherty was born in 1838 in Longton. In 1859 he married Mary Ann Birks in Fenton, Staffs. In 1861 The family lived in Duke Street, Fenton, Staffs.
He was a Coal Miner, she was a Potter/Painter. They then moved to no. 9 Weston Place and are there in the 1871, 1881, 1901 and 1911 census. Thomas and Mary Ann had 7 children. Their first born, Alice, was born in Longton in 1895. She was born deaf and dumb. She died in 1895. Next came twins Thomas and Catherine, born in 1864 in Longton. Then Anne 1869 Longton, James 1875 Longton, Elizabeth 1879 Longton and lastly John 1881 Longton.

John Flaherty (your direct ancestor) was born in 1851 in Longton.
In1861 he is living with his widowed mother Alice, and the rest of his brothers and sisters.

1861 census, 7 Waterloo Street, Longton, Staffordshire.

Alice Flaherty, Head, Widow, 44, Household Duties, born in Tipperary, Ireland.
Sarah Flaherty, Daughter, Single, 17, App. Transferrer, born in Longton.
Mary Flaherty, Daughter, 15, App. Wheel Turner, born in Longton.
James Flaherty, Son, 13, Mould Turner, born in Longton.
John Flaherty, Son, 10, Mould Turner, born in Longton.
Alice Flaherty, Daughter, 9 (born in the year her Father died). Born in Longton.
Michael Flaherty, Son, 5, Scholar, born in Longton.
James Callaghan, Lodger, Single, 30, Coal Miner, born in Roscommon, Ireland.
Edward Byrne, Lodger, Single, 50, Late Wool Comber, born in Limerick, Ireland.

As you can see, Michael seems to be a bit of a mystery but all will become clear…ish.

I looked to see where John Flaherty was in 1871 and was surprised to find him living a few doors down from his Mothers house in Waterloo Street, in lodgings.

1871 census, 12 Waterloo Street, Longton, Staffordshire.

Margaret Levens, Head, Married, 78, born in Ireland.
Mary Ann Hoy, Daughter, Married, 21, born in Birmingham.
Patrick Hoy, Son-in-Law, 22, Brick Maker, born in Ireland.
John Hoy, Grandson, 10 months, born in Longton.
John Doherty, Lodger, Widow, 64, Rag Gatherer, born in Ireland.
Jarvis Ridge, Lodger, Single, 18, Hawker, born in Longton.
George Hilland, Lodger, 65, Married, Hairdresser, born in Yorkshire.
Sophia Hilland, Wife, 60, born in London.
John Flaherty, 19, Potter’s Printer, born in Longton.

And up the road at no. 7 Waterloo Street (Where Alice and James Callaghan are telling porkies about their age) ….

1871 census, 7 Waterloo Street, Longton, Staffordshire.

James Callaghan, Head, Married, 44, Coal Miner, born in Ireland.
Alice Callaghan, Wife, 46, born in Ireland.
James Flaherty, Stepson, 22, Potter (Saffar?) Maker, born in Longton.
Alice Flaherty, Stepdaughter, 18, Potter Taker Off, born in Longton.

I can find no trace of what happened to young Michael except for a death record for a Michael Flaherty born in 1856 who died in Roscommon, Ireland, age 11.

Anyway, back to John Flaherty.

In 1872 in Stoke on Trent, he marries Mary Flynn. Her father was Patrick Flynn who was born in 1814 in Roscommon, Ireland. Her mother was Bridgett (unknown) who was born in County Mayo, Ireland. Mary Flynn was born in 1853 in Longton, Staffs.

Here are John and Mary, living with her widowed mother in 1881.
