Great result :banana but somewhat expected as this was a Chelsea eleven of youth team standard.

I did not go to the match, nor did a substantial group of Crawley supporters due to the match being priced at £14, the same price as league games :banghead

Hope to be at the friendly against Crystal Palace on Friday. CP have promised us a proper strength side so that should be a bit more interesting :scarf

Will report on the game and the new season in League 2. Not too long to wait now :blob8

Pre-Season Friendlies

Postby steveizy » Sat Jul 23, 2011 3:52 pm

Crawley have scored 17 goals and let in 3 in their four matches so far. A pretty good start :-D

The Chelsea eleven were the first victims. Crawley 6 Chelsea XI 1, this was really the Chelsea youth and reserve team.

Then on Tuesday, the squad was split in half for away matches at Bognor Regis Town and East Grinstead Town.

Bognor Regis Town 1 Crawley Town 3 :thumbsup
East Grinstead Town 1 Crawley Town 8

Obviously, it is important not to read too much into these results against lesser opposition but good results nonetheless.

Last night (Fri) we played Championship club Crystal Palace and I went along with Carol for our first game of the friendlies.

Crawley 0 Crystal Palace 0 :applause

Despite the lack of goals, this was a very entertaining match played between two sides who were equal on the day. The gulf of two divisions between the clubs was not at all apparent. In fact, in my slightly biased eyes, Crawley were the better team for most of the match.

Nice to see some of the new signings in action gelling into the team and working very hard. No complaints there. Also very impressed by a young trialist Shane O’Connor who played most of the first half before being replaced by Tubbs. The lad was fit and fast and industrious and came close to scoring. I hope Steve Evans gives the lad a contract.

The crowd of 2,109 was a bit disappointing as were the burgers but the weather was glorious for a change this summer.

An enjoyable evening out.... can't wait for Tuesday when we play Peterborough for another real test. Then on Friday when we host AFC Plastic Wimbledon in our (and their) first foray into the Carling Cup! The winner will face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the next round.

I shall be at both these matches and will report back :yes

Crawley Town 2 Peterborough 4

A game of two halves.

Crawley were leading 2-0 until shortly before the end of the first half. Goals by Tyrone Barnet 25mins and a cracking free kick from Dean Howell at 28 mins saw the Reds take a potentially winning lead. Posh pulled one back before the half-time whistle.

After the break, Steve Evans made nine substitutions leaving just GK Shearer and Howell from the starting XI. It is fair to say that the second half eleven were not nearly of the quality and before long Posh equalised, then the poor second half ended in the 2-4 defeat. We should not read too much into this defeat as it is common to play "experimental" teams in friendlies. Steve Evans certainly would have noted the huge difference in standard. Let's hope that the team against The Plastics on Friday consists substantially of players from the first half :yes Also, this was a full strength Posh side.

The crowd was only 615, which does suggest that the club has got the pricing too high - certainly for this match :duh

Next action is on Friday, k.o.7:45pm, when we play AFC Wimbledon in the first round eliminator of the Carling Cup. A big crowd is guaranteed for this local derby that has a lot riding on it :punch

Good match to kick off against AFC Wimbledon in the first round eliminator of the Carling Cup.
I think the 3 1 trouncing we a gave them at Broadfield last year sets the 'bar' for the first game :yes I think it will a important Crawley game, especially from a moral standpoint
It will be certainly b nail-biting time until that final whistle blows :youreds

Yes and no!

It's certainly a big game and will provide much needed dosh for the club but an injustice has been done to both clubs. As new members of the Football League, both clubs should and normally would have qualified for the first round proper. This year there was an odd number of teams - something to do with Birmingham, therefore, one of the two newest clubs had to make way by means of this eliminator.

Hopefully we will push The Plastics aside but even though we beat them by 15 points last season nothing can be taken for granted in football :no

After the experiments with Peterborough, I feel Steve Evans will know exactly what sort of team to play and I am quietly confident that we will win this crunch match. Time will tell.

Latest news is that tickets for the Terraces (Standing) are still available but tickets selling fast.

All in all, despite the "injustice", probably the best pre-season warm up that a club can have and we've got it :blob8

It's going to be a big match and hopefully good preparation for the future in League 2 :yes
