Seaford - East Sussex

By Malcolm J Page – Photographer

Seaford is a coastal town set between Newhaven and Cuckmere Haven.
In the Middle Ages, Seaford was one of the main ports serving Southern England, but the town's fortunes declined due to coastal sedimentation silting up its harbour and persistent raids by French pirates!
It has been stated that between period of 1350 and 1550, the French burned down the town several times.
As local legend has it, Seaford residents would, on occasion, cause ships to run aground by placing fake harbour lights on the cliffs.
At this time the people of Seaford became to be known as "cormorants" or "shags" because of their enthusiasm for looting ships wrecked in the bay.
I visited the beach and cliffs on three occasions to get the following sequence of photographs. You can walk up to the cliffs and onto the west side of Cuckmere Haven.
Seaford has excellent beaches for walking, made up of mostly sand and shingle.
I highly recommend you visit this historical and picturesque seaside town
(population in the region of 28,000)
I was lucky to get two very colourful sunsets and hope you like the photographs!

Directions from Crawley:
Take the A23 to near Brighton and turn left onto the A27 Lewes, follow the signs to Newhaven then Seaford.
There is parking by the beach which should be free.
